Founded in 1991, ETW's International Theatre Workshop in Amsterdam is a seven week intensive summer training program in contemporary acting, performance, dance, and vocal techniques. Students study with an international faculty comprised of European master teachers, ETW master teachers, and members of major European theatre companies. The curriculum introduces students to physically based acting and the applications of contemporary training techniques to script analysis, table work, and scene study (contemporary and Shakespeare), and progresses through various approaches to performance training, including Le Coq mask and commedia work, post modern dance, vocal improvisation, and the creation of narrative and image-based original theatre. The program culminates in the presentation of original student work.
Past teachers have included members of Theatre du Soleil/Paris, Peter Brook's company, The Royal Shakespeare Company, and the Roy Hart Theater; Karelmaria De Boeck (Le Coq mask work), France Bruyere from La La La Human Steps/Montreal (contemporary ballet and repertoire), Dogtroep (seminar in conceptual performance), Kevin Kuhlke, Paul Langland, Saskia Heght, and Kristin Linklater.
In addition to providing students with a rigorous training program, ETW/Amsterdam exposes them to the works of major European theatre artists. Holland is the summer home of several international festivals, including The Holland Festival, The New Dance Festival, and the Triple X Experimental Theater Festival. Students participate in the International Theater School Festival in Amsterdam, training with European students in workshops offered by master teachers from Eastern and Western Europe and the Middle East, and attending performances by the participating theatre schools. Students are housed and all classes are taught in the center of Amsterdam.
