Courses Not Accepted as General Education

CAS

Most courses from the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) count towards Liberal Arts General Education requirements, with the following exceptions:

  • CAS courses related to the major (theatre/drama). Theater history courses must be taken within the department of Drama (H28.) to fulfill Theatre Studies requirements.
  • Beginning-level Foreign Language courses count as Electives, until the student completes an advanced (level II) course; at which point both beginning and advanced courses may move to cover Humanities/Liberal Arts requirements. If a student places out of a beginning level course, the advanced course will automatically fulfill Humanities/Liberal Arts.
  • Practical or skills courses within CAS cannot be taken as Liberal Arts. Examples:
    • English: Creative Writing courses will not fulfill Liberal Arts requirements.
    • Journalism: Reporting, Copy Editing or any other lab courses (Courses listed as LAB) do not fulfill Liberal Arts requirements. Journalism lecture or theory courses can be counted towards Science. (In the Directory, check to see if the course type is listed "SEM" or "LEC")
    • Music: Only history or theory courses count towards Humanities. All other music courses count as electives.

Tisch

Many Tisch Open Arts courses count as General Education. Please check with your advisor and adhere to the following guidelines:

  • Up to two Cinema Studies (H72.) courses may fulfill Humanities/Liberal Arts requirements.  After the second course, Cinema Studies courses will only count as Electives
  • Department of Art and Public Policy courses (H48.) generally count towards Science/Liberal Arts. Check with your advisor.
  • Skills-based courses do not fulfill General Education requirements.

Additional Schools

Courses taken in the following schools will only count towards Elective credit:

  • Gallatin
  • Stern
  • School of Education

You may not take courses from the School of Continuing and Professional Studies (SCPS) for credit.

If you have questions about a particular course, please see your advisor.

For a list of courses that are acceptable for General Education credit, please see General Education Courses.
