General Education Information (a.k.a. Liberal Arts)

Gen Ed credit can be earned from almost any undergrad program in the College of Arts and Science (CAS).  You must eventually complete 8 points of Science, 8 points of Humanities, and 8 additional points of Science or Humanities (“Balance of Liberal Arts”).  You may not take Theater and Drama courses, even those offered through CAS, for Gen Ed credit.  Additionally, any practical or skills-based course – e.g., Creative Writing, Reporting, or Copy Editing – will only count as Elective credit.  Gallatin, Stern and Steinhardt courses only count as Elective credit for Tisch students, regardless of the content of the course.

Many courses are cross-listed with other departments, so it can be difficult to discern what counts as what.  If you are unsure as to what a course counts as, you can email the course name, course number, and course description to drama.advisementcenter@nyu.edu or speak with your advisor.  Visit http://cas.nyu.edu/page/ug.MajorsMinors for detailed course descriptions, faculty biographies, syllabi, etc.  Please note that Tisch makes the final decision on these designations.

The lists below provide a general guideline for how courses in different departments count for Tisch students.  However, since many departments offer courses in both the Sciences and Humanities, you will need to discuss your course choices with your advisor to determine how a course counts towards your degree.

Policy on Foreign Language Study

-Introductory (Level I) language classes count as Elective credit.  However, if you eventually take Level II, both levels will count as Humanities credit.

-If you place into a higher level language class through a placement exam (for example, “Intermediate Romanian II”), the course will automatically count as Humanities credit.

-Intensive (6-point) language courses automatically count as Humanities credit.
