History of Directing

H28.0725   Lecture   4 Credits
Instructor(s): Roger Babb

This class will examine major trends and figures in European and American directing practice and theory since the late 19th century. After considering alternate models of “director” in previous eras, we will examine the Duke of Saxe Meinengen and Wagner as forebears of the 20th century “culture of the director.” The syllabus may also include the following: Stanislavsky, Meyerhold, Vakhtangov, Brecht, Clurman, La Galliene, Malina & Beck, Schechner, Chaikin, Wilson, Foreman, Bausch, Bogart and La Compt. We will also consider ensemble collaboration (with and without directors), the director-auteur, and physical training practice. Course work will include significant reading, archival research, an in-class performance project and reflection paper, and a culminating research paper.
