Working to find each student’s clown character – in the words of Philippe Gaulier, “a unique idiotic character” – we will discover the delight of a child, the vulnerability of the actor, and the failure of the clown striving to maintain dignity in the midst of catastrophe. Class will involve both solo and partner work, and the status, pleasure and monumental failure in the clown’s relationship to the audience. The class will draw upon exercises based in the techniques of Avner Eisenberg, Julie Goell and Philippe Gaulier.
