Collaborative Arts Project 21 (CAP 21)

NYU TISCH SCHOOL OF THE ARTS @ CAP21

The comprehensive curriculum seamlessly integrates the three disciplines of Acting, Dance and Voice/Music into the actor’s body and technique creating a well-rounded and versatile young actor.  The faculty of CAP21 is comprised of the finest master teachers and working professionals who specialize in the integration of these three disciplines.

The acting curriculum is rooted in the belief that truthful acting is created through great storytelling, physical behavior and sensory work based on the teachings and influences of Stanislavski. It is CAP21’s belief that superior training and technique are facilitated by the use of great theatrical literature including: Shakespeare, Arthur Miller, Anton Chekhov, Tennessee Williams, Rodgers & Hammerstein and Stephen Sondheim as examples. For second and third year actors, advanced classes such as Vocal Performance and Musical Scene Study are added as well as Dialects, Audition Technique, Monologues and the Business of “The Business”. The voice & music curriculum trains the actor in vocal technique, sight singing and ear training. The Voice and Speech classes intensively train the actors’ instruments using the Linklater and Skinner Systems of vocal production. The dance curriculum consists of the actor developing and/or continuing strong technique in ballet, modern, yoga, tap and jazz. Throughout the dance progression, the curriculum builds to all styles of theatre dance, song and dance and modern dance to further incorporate the actor’s physical body into all areas of their work.  Click here for: application and other information.

PRODUCTIONS

Every year, three Conservatory workshop productions are produced in CAP21’s performance space, The Shop.  CAP21 strives to incorporate not only productions from the classic musical theatre cannon but new or revisited works from industry professionals such as Galt McDermott, Stuart Ross and Debra Barsha.  Fourth Year students participate in an industry presentation that is attended by agents and casting directors in the early part of the new year. Past Conservatory productions have included such classic and contemporary works as The Boys from Syracuse, Cabaret, City of Angels, Grand Hotel, Hair, Into The Woods, Nine, On The Town, Pippin, Sweeney Todd, Urinetown and the more Rock/Pop infused scores of Goddess Wheel, Starmites and Radiant Baby.  In addition, each year, students showcase their talents in The Composer Project, Extreme Legit, Cabaret and Pop/Rock Cabaret.
